Best Way To Wash a Weighted Blanket: The Easiest Way To Clean a Weighted Blanket | Luna Blankets

Jun 27, 2019 • Jimmy Page

Have you ever been so excited to buy a new outfit but put it back when you realize it isn’t machine washable? Or, you get a stain on your favorite trenchcoat, and you have to take it all the way to the dry cleaner’s for an expensive washing? More than likely, that coat will end up in your closet for weeks before you’re able to take it to the cleaner.

These days, our lives are too busy to spend time finding a solution for how to wash and dry our belongings. That’s why we at Luna created a weighted blanket that can be washed in the comfort of your own home. Life is too short to buy blankets that aren’t machine washable!

Are All Weighted Blankets Machine Washable?

Not all weighted blankets are created equal. In fact, most of the weighted blanket brands you may have heard of are actually spot-clean and hand-wash only! Our weighted blankets stand out from the crowd due to how simple it is to keep them clean.

How To Wash Luna Weighted Blankets

Our blankets are easy to wash! Before you do, though, be sure to check out your washing machine and dryer’s weight capacity. If your blanket is too heavy, most laundromats have high-capacity equipment that you can use.

Simply follow these  steps to get a squeaky clean blanket in no time:

  1. Wash it separately in cold water.
  2. Select the delicate cycle.
  3. Use gentle or mild detergent.
  4. Tumble dry on low heat or line dry.

With these easy steps in mind, we do want to mention that we don’t recommend over-washing your blanket. Instead, consider adding a weighted blanket cover to help make your washing experience even easier and your blanket’s life even longer. Just unzip it, unloop it, slide it off your blanket, and throw it in the wash.

Now that you know how to wash our weighted blankets, it’s time to pick your favorite type! Our blankets come in three different materials: cotton, bamboo, and sherpa fleece. No matter what type of sleeper you are, you’re sure to find the perfect blanket for you.

Cotton Weighted Blanket

Sleep among the clouds with our most popular weighted blanket, the cotton weighted blanket. Made from 100% Oeko-Tex Certified cotton, this basic blanket is a fan favorite. It’s extremely soft and breathable due to our patented airflow channels. It comes in 16 different colors and patterns, including:

  • Dark Grey
  • Light Grey
  • Blue
  • White
  • Pink
  • Lavender
  • Polka Dot Navy
  • And more!

Our cotton weighted blankets wash best in warm or cold water on a gentle setting. If you pick one of the bright or dark colors above, we’d recommend a cold water wash the first time around. Add a cup of salt to lock in that great color and help stop any of the dye from running or fading.

Cooling Bamboo Weighted Blanket

If you sweat in your sleep, this blanket is for you. The cooling bamboo weighted blanket is made from 100% lyocell bamboo and will help prevent you from waking up covered in sweat! It’s thermo-regulating and antimicrobial to keep you fresh.

This is also our most eco-friendly blanket. Lyocell bamboo is made from the most resource-efficient plant on the planet. Lyocell is a sustainable material typically made from wood, but we stepped it up even further by using bamboo!

The cooling bamboo weighted blanket comes in seven colors and patterns, including:

  • Pink
  • Light Grey
  • Dark Grey
  • Grey Stripe
  • White
  • Light Blue
  • Navy

This is our most luxurious option, and did we mention it gets softer with each wash? Use your washer’s gentle cycle and cold water for the optimal washing conditions.

Sherpa Fleece Weighted Blanket

If coziness is key for you, the sherpa fleece weighted blanket is your new bedtime BFF. This blanket is made from silky mink on one side and warm, comfortable sherpa fleece on the other. This blanket is our most versatile; it’s perfect for both the bed and the couch! We kept our sweaty sleepers in mind with this blanket, too. The fabric is still extremely breathable, and the mink side will keep you cool all night.

We kept it simple with four great colors for this blanket. Pick from light grey, dark grey, pink, or navy. To keep the quality of this blanket looking and feeling great, wash on gentle and skip the fabric softener.

Weighted Blankets for Kids

Weighted blankets aren’t just for adults! Most kids over the age of four can use the right size weighted blanket safely. Our kids’ blankets are made from 100% Oeko-Tex Certified cotton to help encourage a comfortable night’s sleep!

If you’re into fun patterns and prints, you might be a little bit jealous of how cool these kids’ blankets are! Your child can choose from 18 different colors and prints, including:

  • Pink Llama
  • Purple Unicorn
  • Blue Sports
  • White Dino
  • Nautical Navy
  • And more!

Like all of our other blankets, our kids’ weighted blankets are machine washable for convenience!

How To Pick a Weighted Blanket Size and Weight

Weighted blankets are typically available in weights from five to 30 pounds. To find the weight that is right for you, we recommend choosing a blanket weight that is roughly 10% of your body weight. For example, an adult weighing 150 pounds should pick a 15-pound blanket. An adult weighing 200 pounds should pick a 20-pound blanket, and so on.

Our blankets come in multiple sizes:

  • Kid
  • Twin
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • Throw

If you’re planning to share your weighted blanket, you’ll need to size up to a king! Weighted blankets are smaller than normal blankets. They are designed to fit your body, not your bed. This helps prevent the blanket from hanging over the edge and shifting off the bed in the middle of the night.

How Do Weighted Blankets Work?

Not quite ready to add a weighted blanket to your nighttime routine? Here’s some more information on what a weighted blanket is and how it can help you!

Weighted blankets are like a warm hug, designed to calm you down and put your mind at ease. They do this using deep touch pressure stimulation, a type of therapy from Temple Grandin, an American scientist and animal behaviorist.

After observing how tight spaces could help calm animals down, she invented something called the “hug box” to help autistic individuals such as herself. The hug box helped so many people that soon, deep pressure touch stimulation took on a new form in the weighted blanket.

Reduces Cortisol Levels

Cortisol is the main stress hormone. It alerts your body when something isn’t right and can send you into “fight or flight” mode. Cortisol is good when it’s signaling your body about a real threat, but many disorders and health issues can leave you with elevated cortisol levels, leaving you unable to relax and sleep well. The comforting pressure of a weighted blanket helps reduce your cortisol levels and signals to your brain and body that you don’t have to be on high alert anymore.

Releases Serotonin and Melatonin

Serotonin is one of the hormones that regulate your mood. People with anxiety, depression, and many other mental health struggles tend to have low serotonin levels, which can lead to a lack of sleep, among other problems. Melatonin helps your body’s sleep-wake cycle work well by making sure you get tired when the sun goes down and wake up when it rises. These hormones are the key to a good night’s sleep, and a weighted blanket helps your body release more of both!.

How To Get Used To Using a Weighted Blanket

Once you find your favorite weighted blanket, order it, and open your package, you’re almost ready to cuddle underneath it and experience a great sleep. It can take a little while to get used to using a weighted blanket, so be patient and give it some time! We recommend following a three-week process to let your body adjust to the new blanket.

Week One

When you first get your blanket, you’ll most likely want to replace your existing blanket right away. We wouldn’t recommend that. Instead, use your weighted blanket on top of your existing blanket or comforter. Start off by only covering your legs. You’ll work your way up from there!

Week Two

After about a week, you can begin to use the weighted blanket on the lower half of your body. You may still want to use your old blanket as well. This will help your body continue to adjust.

Week Three

If your body seems to be adjusting well and forming this new sleep habit, by week three, you can go ahead and get rid of that old blanket and fully use your new weighted blanket.

Don’t worry if it takes you a longer time to get used to your new weighted blanket. Scientists say it can take anywhere from 18 to more days to form a new habit. But we think you’ll love your blanket in no time.

Fresh and Clean

In our fast-paced lives, spending extra time on laundry is not ideal. Don’t let complicated washing instructions hold you back from getting a weighted blanket that will benefit your life in so many ways! When you shop for a blanket, be sure to check and see if it is machine-washable.

Our blankets are made from the highest quality, washable material. Made for the busy mom, college student, messy child, and more! Simply pop it in the wash, dry it on low, and you’re good to go.
